Next up, a 18th century reproduction box loom

So here is my next fun project.   I do love making shuttles but it's such a repetitive task so it is so much fun to have something different to work on and I'm always on the look out for a weaving tool I can re-create...  So here is my newest project.  It is a copy (with a couple little useful updates) of an 18th century box loom.   Oh and how lovely she is.  I am making this one using 1/2" cherry but the heddle is 1/4" as I find warping 1/2 inch to be a bit difficult.  The other update I made was to add a wood washer to the ratchet side of the warp reel and I also added wood washers to the opposite side of the ratchet on both the take up rod and warp reel.  The last update I did was to make the heddle removable so that different pattern heddles could be used and I plan on making several different one.  Probably a couple dbl hole patterns, 5 pattern, 7 pattern, 9 pattern 11 pattern and 13 pattern.
Anyway rather than drone on here are some pictures of the process.  I'll post new pictures to this post as soon as she is complete. :)

I placed this little washer because I didn't like the warp the warp reel moved without it.  This keeps the warp reel centered on the stands.

  1. Janet, that is awesome. I may become a collector/user of box and tape looms. Not brave enough to build one from scratch, but your kits are fun.
